Re the July 26 article We have road rights, too: I respect cyclists’ right to share the road and can appreciate the health benefits of cycling plus the contribution to the environment. However, I do not appreciate the idea that is it OK to flout the law in the name of something good.
Police departments are doing these people a disservice by not recognizing them as equal road users and treating them the same as automobiles.
If a car runs a red light or goes the wrong way down a one-way street, the driver gets a ticket. If a bike does the same, the police laugh. For mutual respect, and to avoid animosity, all people must be treated equally.
When drivers see this favoritism, they rebel by treating the bikers badly.
