An armed 39-year old woman with a history of mental illness barricaded herself inside the eighth floor of a parking garage near the emergency entrance of Jackson Memorial Hospital for more than four hours early Wednesday morning before being taken into custody.
Miami-Dade police identified the woman as Maivel Herrera of Hialeah. A spokesman said Herrera was inside a white Nissan pickup truck with a gun in her hand and was threatening to kill herself before a police negotiator and SWAT teams surrounded the garage and shut it down.
Police say no one was injured at the scene, in the 1400 block of Northwest 12th Avenue.
Herrera, who doesn’t have a criminal record but has been committed to mental health facilities in the past through the Baker Act, recently purchased a handgun from Miami Guns in Hialeah for roughly $400, according to sources familiar with the case.
Despite the scare and the disruption of having one of its four garages shut down Wednesday morning, Jackson Memorial Hospital spokesman Ed O’Dell said "business took place as usual for employees and patients."
