Cutting taxes or offering a flat tax is a great reelection bumper sticker. But anyone who has called 911 for a medical emergency knows the immediate relief of hearing the air brakes of the fire truck with trained professionals coming to your rescue.
I know that feeling — been there twice. Flat taxes and fewer fire personnel and equipment mean longer response times, jeopardizing lives. A flat tax means people of all ages, the poor and the unemployed will have less opportunity to improve their lives as libraries close.
More of God’s creatures will die, which will be more costly to taxpayers than being spayed and neutered, the humane option. More unemployed mean additional bankruptcies and foreclosures, less consumer spending, a smaller tax base and lives shattered.
