The Sweetwater city commission on Monday will vote on the first reading of an ordinance that will give disabled veterans who live in the city an additional discount on their home property taxes.
The discount will apply to municipal taxes and is in addition to the discount already provided by the Miami Dade County Property Appraiser’s office.
The discount will be equal to the percentage of a combat-related disability as determined by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. The widow or widower of a service member can also benefit from this exemption.
The commission meeting will be at 8 p.m. at their chambers at 500 SW 109th Ave.
Mayor Manny Maroño is proposing the ordinance to give extra help to those who served our country.
“In addition to helping veterans pay less taxes, my staff is looking into community outreach programs that will further help veterans by helping them find resources on how to further their education, job placement and housing,” Maroño said.
