In the July 21 Other Views column, Why I scrapped the tax increase, Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s attempt to justify reneging on his promise to support the Pets’ Trust Initiative was extremely disingenuous. He stated “there is simply no support in our community for the tax rate increase at this time.” In whose community do the 483,000 voters in favor of the Trust live?
The Pets’ Trust would have added $20 to our yearly tax bill. Keeping open 22 libraries and six fire-rescue units would not add much more. The mayor may believe that avoiding a minimal yearly tax increase may help him in future elections, but he is in for a rude awakening.
