As a lifelong baseball fan, I want to chime in about the recent suspension of Ryan Braun and what could be an impending and longer suspension for Alex Rodriguez.
Technically both have broken baseball’s rules more than once and should be punished accordingly. Braun’s suspension without pay for the rest of the season seems appropriate. He also showed genuine contrition. As for A-Rod, his talent is often eclipsed by his ego, and he gives the impression that he thinks he’s above the law. He deserves a harsher punishment than Braun received.
But I wonder if baseball without performance-enhancing drugs is realistic. Like a pop star who lip syncs, baseball stars are expected to rise to the highest expectations nearly every night for seven months.
Both players should be setting a better example as privileged athletes.
