I received a circular from Broward County regarding the disposal of fluorescent light bulbs. It suggests two locations in the county to which all such bulbs should be brought when they cease to function.
Fluorescent bulbs shouldn’t be thrown out in the trash; however, the county’s impractical solution will be almost universally ignored.
There are two possible solutions to the problem that would work: Large bins could be installed at convenient locations into which residents could drop materials that should not go into landfills or they could arrange for semi-annual pickups of those materials.
Most people will cooperate with any plan that will protect our groundwater if it can be accomplished without extraordinary effort. The county must take some other tack in order to solve this really pressing problem.
