RUNNING BACK

Most assume the job is Lamar Miller’s to lose, but Dolphins coach Joe Philbin says the competition is wide open. Make or break time for Daniel Thomas, who is entering his third season.

RIGHT GUARD

John Jerry has the power of incumbency. No Dolphins offensive player took more snaps in 2012. But if Lance Louis fully recovers from his torn anterior cruciate ligament, he could overtake Jerry.

KICKER

Dan Carpenter’s Pro Bowl season of 2009 must feel like forever ago. Teams usually don’t use draft picks on specialists like the Dolphins did on Caleb Sturgis unless they intend to keep them.

CORNERBACK

The Dolphins barely had enough warm bodies to make it through all of last season. Now, defensive back might be their deepest position. Brent Grimes and Richard Marshall have the early edge.

RUSH END

Jared Odrick probably will play DE in base downs, but will move inside on sub packages. Can Olivier Vernon hold off Dion Jordan, at least early on? Fins can’t beat the Patriots without getting to Tom Brady.
