I was appalled when I went to check out books at the Pinecrest Library. I’m a teacher and an avid reader, so the librarian knew I’d be interested in the Miami-Dade Commission debate regarding library closures.
Concurrently, our schools are instituting the new Common Core Curriculum, which requires research and encourages independent student reading and learning. However, the county appears to be working against these goals by eliminating the places where research and independent reading and learning take place.
Are commissioners aware that many public schools have lost their librarians and their libraries have cut hours of operation? Let’s implore the County Commission to keep our public libraries open.
