Joy-Ann Reid’s July 11 column, The slavery-abortion analogy, reveals the dirty truth behind today’s white male legislators’ obsession with controlling women’s reproductive lives. White men’s history of shameful past ownership of black women and men as slaves embedded a sense of entitlement to control and dictate the most basic, intimate and personal aspects of another human being’s life. That sense of entitlement is on display daily in Republican-controlled state legislatures across the country.
Like the legacy of slavery, the legacy of control over women’s reproduction has to stop. No amount of legislation will deter any woman from following her own conscience and making responsible, informed, moral decisions about her health, her future, the welfare of her family and her very life when it comes to her pregnancy. That right belongs to only one person, and he doesn’t sit in any legislature or preach any religion.
