Nightly Bear Cut Bridge lane closure to begin Monday

pmazzei@MiamiHerald.com

A lane on the bridge that connects Virginia Key to Key Biscayne will be closed at night beginning Monday as part of the ongoing project to rehabilitate the deteriorated structure.

One of the Bear Cut Bridge’s two westbound lanes toward the mainland will be shut down between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The two eastbound lanes will remain open at all times.

Construction work began earlier this month to fix the Bear Cut Bridge and the smaller West Bridge immediately after the Rickenbacker Causeway toll plaza. A year-long, $31 million project will replace the corroded steel beams that hold up the bridges.

Later this month, one of the eastbound Bear Cut Bridge lanes is also scheduled to be closed overnight, according to updates posted on the project’s website, bearcutbridge.com.
