Miami-Dade mayor undecided on Jackson bond vote

Don’t count on Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez to help the public Jackson Health System make its pitch to voters for $830 million in taxpayer-funded upgrades.

Gimenez told The Miami Herald last week that he has not decided if he will vote for the property-tax rate hike on the Nov. 5 ballot.

“I don’t know yet,” he said.

The day county commissioners approved the referendum earlier this month, the mayor said he worries about how Jackson’s plans might be affected by the federal healthcare overhaul. It will be a while before the public hospital system knows the extent of the Affordable Care Act’s effects on Jackson’s ability to compete, Gimenez said.

Jackson CEO Carlos Migoya has hired a campaign manager to run the political push on behalf of the hospital. Its fundraising arm, the Citizens for a Healthy Miami-Dade political action committee, had not raised any money as of June 30, according to campaign finance reports filed last week.
