Support Jackson hospital

I have been a fan of Michael Putney for many years. But I could not fully agree with his July 10 Other Views column, Bond issue tough sell for a tax-weary public.

I understand the plight of Miami-Dade County residents, burdened with paying the way for ballparks, tolls and the like.

I have recently spent a lot of time at Jackson Memorial Hospital with an ill patient, using the facilities in the critical-care unit.

The old and dilapidated surroundings did not affect the high quality of care or dampen the spirit and professionalism of staff and students. This hospital needs a serious makeover of its physical plant in order to provide the highest quality of care to all who come through its portals.

The community is being asked to vote on a most serious matter: healthcare in the year 2013 at a major public institution. We should and can do better for a city we all love.

  • Libraries do save lives

The Sept. 15 letter Public libraries save lives, brought tears to my eyes. Carlos Eire, today a Yale University professor, told how that shabby little library on Northwest Seventh Street provided not only a lasting influence on his life, but also a rich legacy to the many whose lives he has touched through his own books and teaching.
