Miami police have arrested the gunman who they say shot and killed a man who was sitting on a bus bench Wednesday.
Zackary McGriff, 21, turned himself in to the Jackson Memorial Hospital Crisis unit Thursday and was apprehended by Miami police on an unrelated charge.
McGriff was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 36-year-old Juan Augustine Lorenzo-Gonzalez.
Police said McGriffs mother called homicide detectives around 5 p.m. Thursday, telling them that McGriff gave her a handgun then left her home, saying he was going to JMH to commit himself.
McGriffs arrest comes a day after Lorenzo-Gonzalez was shot and killed around 5:30 p.m. as he waited at the bus stop near a busy area at Northwest 36th Street and 12th Avenue. Lorenzo-Gonzalez was holding several white bags, as though he had been shopping.
Witnesses told investigators Lorenzo-Gonzalez was sitting on a bus bench Wednesday when a gunman wearing a white shirt and black shorts walked up, shot him and fled north.
A stumbling Lorenzo-Gonzalez stumbled tried to cross Northwest 36th Street but collapsed and died on the street. An autopsy later showed he died of a single gunshot wound.
A surveillance video obtained by Miami Herald news partner CBS4 showed a man in a white shirt skipping up 15th Avenue. Police say a witness followed the gunman and later provided them with the direction that he fled following the shooting.
When McGriff was arrested, his clothing matched witnesses description of the gunman. It is not known why he went to JMHs Crisis unit.
Police say the shooters motive may have been to rob Lorenzo-Gonzalez, but are not ruling out other possibilities.
Calls to a cellphone listed on the police affidavit went to voicemail. It is not known whether it is McGriffs number, but someone someone carried out a pretend conversation with the caller as music blareed in the background.
Hello, hello. Hold on, let me turn the music down. What they do? Chillin, chillin, chillin. You the only one who got my number, you got my voicemail .
In addition to the murder charge, McGriff was charged with the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and carrying a concealed weapon.
