The Marlins have tried 22 players at third base since trading Miguel Cabrera after the 2007 season.
They’re hoping Colin Moran brings the revolving door to a grinding halt.
The Marlins on Thursday agreed to terms with Moran, the sixth overall pick in the June amateur draft and a standout third baseman at the University of North Carolina.
Moran had been offered the slot value for that pick: $3.52 million. He helped lead the Tar Heels to the College World Series by hitting .348 and driving in 86 runs.
The deal is complete pending a physical.
Although the Marlins finally reeled in Moran, one of the last first-round selections to sign, they are not expected to sign two of their other high picks, high school left-hander Matt Krook and high school infielder Ben Deluzio, before Friday’s 5 p.m. deadline.
Krook, who was chosen in Compensation Round A, failed his physical. Sources said Deluzio, who was taken in the third round with the 80th overall pick, refused the Marlins’ offer of $681,000, which was the slot value assigned to that pick, and will instead attend Florida State.
Moran is expected to begin his pro career with the Marlins at Short Season Batavia (N.Y.) in the New York-Penn League.
He could be wearing a Marlins uniform as early as next season.
