JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) today announced the online publication of the organization’s comprehensive diabetes management algorithm consensus statement.

The algorithm was originally published in the association’s Volume 19/Issue 2, March/April 2013 peer-reviewed medical journal Endocrine Practice, which is available to AACE members and journal subscribers. The consensus statement, which includes the algorithm, is now available for free download to all interested parties at https://www.aace.com/files/consensus-statement.pdf. The compendium is organized into sections addressing specific recommendations related to obesity, prediabetes, lifestyle modifications for management of hyperlipidemia, pharmacotherapy and insulin, hypertension management, hyperlipidemia management, and other risk-reduction strategies.

The algorithm replaces the 2009 AACE/American College of Endocrinology (ACE) Algorithm for glycemic control and expands on that document to address more broad-based strategies for risk and complications reduction and provides recommendations for the treatment of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Highlights include:

• Management of diabetes and co-existing diseases or disorders in the prediabetic phase of disease.
• A hierarchy of steps for the management of high blood sugar control using an approach that balances age and comorbidities while minimizing the adverse effects of hypoglycemia and weight gain.
• A complications-centric model for care of the overweight or obese patient incorporating body mass index (BMI) as one of many considerations vs. the previous algorithm, which was primarily body mass index (BMI)-centric.
• Management of cardiovascular disease risk factors, hypertension and hyperlipidemia (high lipid levels) in those patients with prediabetes or T2DM.
