FBI interviews City Council, city employees

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The FBI is interviewing all six Fort Myers City Council members and four city employees regarding a proposed downtown hotel and a complicated land deal that helped a road widening project five years ago.

The News-Press of Fort Myers (http://newspr.es/11FEowF) reports councilman Mike Flanders said when he was interviewed Tuesday the agents told him "one of the issues that they were given by the U.S. government to deal with is political corruption."

Officials were asked about the purchase of property owned by a local businessman for a joint project between the city, Lee County and the state Department of Transportation to widen a road.

The city gave the businessman impact fee credits for part of his property rather than a direct payment to keep costs down.
