Obama to meet with Greek leader in August

The Associated Press

The White House says Greece's leader will meet with President Barack Obama next month at the White House.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras (ahn-TOH'-nees sah-mah-RAHS') will visit on August 8. The White House says they'll discuss American support for Greece's economic reform efforts. They'll also discuss trade negotiations and Cyprus. Defense cooperation, counterterrorism and security issues in Syria and North Africa are also on the agenda.

The meeting comes as Samaras is promising to speed up austerity reforms related to the financial crisis that has plunged Greece into a deep recession.

Greece has promised to cut thousands of civil service jobs so the country can keep receiving vital funds from its international bailout. Last month, the coalition government cobbled together after 2012 elections came to the brink of collapse.
