Padres fall 5-4 to Rockies, lose 13th out of 15

Losing for the 13th time in 15 games left the San Diego Padres trying to find some positives.

Even though Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa beat San Diego for the sixth straight time in Colorado's 5-4 victory on Wednesday night, Padres manager Bud Black saw things he liked.

"The guys come in every day ready to play," Black said. "I don't see any bad signs during our at-bats or giving at-bats away. I'm not seeing fundamental plays not being made in the field. There are going to be physical mistakes, but there haven't been mental mistakes over the past couple of weeks."

The Padres did show some fight.

With San Diego trailing 4-0 going into the sixth, Carlos Quentin hit his 11th home run, a two-run shot to straightaway center field that scoring Chase Headley, who had walked. That pulled the Padres within 4-2 and spelled the end for De La Rosa (9-5), who allowed two hits over five innings with four walks and four strikeouts.

"We couldn't get to De La Rosa until Q's homer," Black said. "He kept us in check. We couldn't mount any attack against him. He did a good job of keeping the ball down and changing speed. The change/split is a very effective pitch. The fastball, change combo was also effective."

San Diego's Everth Cabrera doubled down the left-field line off Rockies reliever Matt Belisle leading off the seventh and came around to score on a single to right by Chris Denorfia, making it 4-3.

The Rockies came back with an insurance run in the eighth off Padres reliever Nick Vincent on an RBI triple by Charlie Blackmon that scored pinch hitter Corey Dickerson, who had singled with one out.

Blackmon tied his career-high with two RBIs and made a diving catch off pinch hitter Mark Kotsay's sinking liner to center field with two runners on in the sixth.

"I'm very thankful that the Rockies got enough faith in me to put me in this position (and) to have an opportunity," Blackmon said. "I'm just blessed to be healthy and be here, and it really feels good to help be a part of a team win."

Rockies reliever Rex Brothers pitched a scoreless eighth and Rafael Betancourt came on in the ninth to pick up his 13th save in 14 opportunities.

Betancourt gave up an infield single to Cabrera with one out. Cabrera got to second on an infield groundout by Denorfia. Headley singled home Cabrera with two out and then stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. Betancourt then got Quentin to pop out to first in foul territory to end the game.

"We're not beating ourselves," Headley said. "For the most part we played pretty sound baseball. We got to find a way to get over that little hump. We have a lot of close games where one play could change the game."

De La Rosa lifted his record at Petco Park to 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA. His six game winning streak against San Diego spans eight starts.

Andrew Cashner (5-5) went five innings for the Padres, giving up three runs, two earned on eight hits. He struck out five, walked two and threw a wild pitch that led to a Rockies run in the fifth.

All eight position players for the Rockies had at least one hit and the Rockies outhit the Padres 13-7.

Jonathan Herrera drove in the Rockies' first run with a sacrifice fly off Cashner in the second inning.

Herrera's sacrifice fly scored Todd Helton in the second. Helton had walked leading off and moved to third on a double by Yorvit Torrealba.

Helton drove in the Rockies' second run with a single in the third that scored D.J. LeMahieu from second.
