Ducks land Grant with one-year contract

The Ducks continued to fill out their organization by signing defenseman Alex Grant to a one-year deal Wednesday.

The sides agreed on a contract that will pay Grant an NHL-based salary of $550,000 and an American Hockey League amount of $75,000.

Grant was a restricted free agent and the club acquired his rights from Pittsburgh for winger Harry Zolnierczyk.

Grant, 24, played in 46 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the Pittsburgh Penguins' AHL affiliate, and had four goals, 16 assists and 73 penalty minutes. He was a fourth-round pick for the Penguins in 2007.

In 13 Calder Cup playoff games, Grant had two goals, two assists and 27 penalty minutes in helping the Penguins advance to the Eastern Conference final.

Assistant hired

The Ducks hired former NHL player Jarrod Skalde as an assistant coachfor its American Hockey League affiliate Norfolk Admirals.

Skalde, 42, was a member of the expansion Mighty Ducks in 1993-94 and had five goals and four assists in 20 games. He also had brief stints with New Jersey, Calgary, San Jose, Dallas, Atlanta,Chicago and Philadelphia.

Most recently, Skalde spent the past three seasons coaching the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones and was named the league's coach of the year in 2013 after leading the Cyclones to a 42-22-8 record and a North Division title.

Skalde joins Marty Wilfordas assistants on Trent Yawney'sstaff.
