Forgive Deen and move on

Bea Hines writes concisely, beautifully and with grace and human dignity in her July 4 column, It feels good to forgive Paula Deen. Moreover, Hines knows whereof she speaks. Among all the knee-jerk hubbub surrounding the Deen debacle, her words serve both as a reminder of where we once were and a balm that we can forgive each other for those times and attitudes.

Last year, a non-binding straw ballot question was put to Miami-Dade voters that asked whether the county should raise property taxes to help fund enhanced animal services in our community. Voters strongly supported the question posed and the idea of saving pets’ lives. Unfortunately, the voters were given only one choice to make: raise taxes to provide for animal welfare or let the pets die. 1373581197
