Crowd favorite Philipp Kohlschreiber was a straight-set second-round winner Wednesday at the $530,000 Mercedes Cup tennis event.

The second seed handled qualifier and fellow German Nils Langer 7-5, 6-2 on the red clay at Weissenhof Tennis Club. The 23-year-old Langer went 1-1 in his ATP World Tour debut this week.

Kohlschreiber should have his hands full with former top-10 star Gael Monfils in the quarterfinals.

A trio of second-round upsets came when German wild card Michael Berrer doused third-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, the 2009 Stuttgart champ, 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, the flashy Frenchman Monfils drilled sixth-seeded German Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-0, and rising Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut took out eighth-seeded Slovak Martin Klizan 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-4. Monfils was a Stuttgart runner-up in 2010.

On Thursday, long-time German favorite Tommy Haas will play his second-round match against capable Latvian Ernests Gulbis. The 35-year-old Haas was the Stuttgart runner-up in 1999.

This week's big winner will take home $110,000 and a brand new Mercedes-Benz sports car.
