Top pick Hartman forced to be observer at Blackhawks prospect camp

Chicago Tribune

As an extra session at Blackhawks prospect camp wound down Monday at Johnny's IceHouse West, Ryan Hartman watched from behind the glass outside the team's dressing room.

The first-round draft pick is relegated to the role of observer for the on-ice sessions that run through Friday because of surgery on his right shoulder eight weeks ago.

Hartman, an 18-year-old forward who was the 30th pick in the draft last month, said he dislocated his shoulder during his season with the Plymouth Whalers in the Ontario Hockey League. He played through the injury, totaling 23 goals and 37 assists in 56 games, before having surgery when the season ended.

Hartman, who said he can be a physical presence and a scorer for the Hawks, hopes to be back on the ice in two to three weeks and able to shoot in four to five weeks.

"It's definitely tough being on the other side of the glass, but I've been working out and doing other stuff," Hartman said. "I might be ahead of schedule a little bit, so it's feeling really good right now."

Hartman, a West Dundee, Ill., native, said he and his family are "lifelong Blackhawks fans" and proclaimed it "really cool" to be at the Hawks facilities this week. He's one of several locals on the 51-player camp roster, including fellow 2013 pick Anthony Louis, a Winfield native with whom Hartman said he has played over the years.

"It really hits you when you're in the locker room and you see 'Stanley Cup champions' on the wall and you know that you're in one of the top programs in the NHL," said Tim O'Brien, a Winnetka native who attended Loyola Academy.

Return to Chicago: Jake Chelios knows he brings name recognition as the son of 26-year NHL veteran and former Hawks defenseman Chris Chelios.

The 22-year-old defenseman from Michigan State is trying to boost his own name this week.

"Growing up here, I don't think I realized how big of a name it was, but coming back 10 years later, you realize everybody knows the last name," said Chelios, whose father now works as the Red Wings' adviser to hockey operations. "Chicago's still a great city to have in our family, so it's nice to come back."

Chelios, who totaled five goals and five assists in 42 games as a junior last season, said he feels more comfortable in his second year at the camp.

"It's a little more fun, knowing what to do, not always being lost on the street and wondering where the team bus is," Chelios said. "It's awesome to come in here and be with the best team in the world this year and get a little piece of what they got this year."

Missing: Goaltender Antti Raanta was held out of Monday's session as a precaution because of a minor injury, according to the Hawks.

Raanta was signed to a one-year free-agent contract in early June from Finland. He went 21-10-11 with five shutouts in the regular season and 12-4 with a 1.33 goals-against average in the playoffs.
