How the Dow Jones industrial average fared Monday

The Dow Jones industrial average rose on Monday before companies began reporting their second-quarter earnings. Alcoa was the first major corporation to report its earnings after the close of trading.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 88.85 points, or 0.6 percent, to 15,224.69.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 8.57 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,640.46.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 5.45 points, or 0.2 percent, to 3,484.83.

For the year:

The Dow is up 2,120.55 points, or 16.8 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 214.27 points, or 15 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 465.32 points, or 15.4 percent.
