Montevideo is a city defined by a river - the tawny-colored River Plate, so vast it seems to have no opposite shore as it rolls out into the sea.

In Montevideo, one can seek and find the horizon from almost anywhere. It's that place where the river and the heavens meet.

And when residents of Uruguay's capital city relax, they often head to a promenade along the shore, a ribbon of rose granite.

Winter turns Montevideo nostalgic, tranquil, reflective. The beaches are almost empty and vendors sell hot peanuts instead of ice cream.

Looking out at the horizon, a solitary man fishes from a small dock as the sun begins to set. Another man pushes his bicycle across the empty sand. A schoolboy plays at being a soccer star. They savor the solitude, the salty air, the wide open space. And all that river.
