I enjoyed the article about Winston-Salem, N.C., in the June 23 Travel section. I was born there in 1942, but, aside from the tobacco industry, I did not know any of its history.
When I was a toddler, my father, a physician, was drafted into World War II. My mother then took me to her parents’ home — the small town of Newark in upstate New York. My grandparents had a clothing store there.
We moved to Miami in 1948. I have not yet gotten back to Winston-Salem, but certainly would like to see the city. Maybe a Wake Forest-University of Miami football game?
