Notes
There have been 59 previous F1-sanctioned German GPs. Nurburgring will host the event for the 26th time this year. It has been held at Hockenheim 33 times, including last year. One event took place at Berlin's Avus Circuit in 1959.
An eight-year gap separated the last race on the Nurburgring Nordschleife and the first on the 'new' (current) Nurburgring. Niki Lauda's near-fatal crash on the 14-mile old circuit in 1976 curtailed Formula One racing there. The first event on the modern track was held in 1984.
The current Nurburgring has hosted various grand prix in the last 29 years: German GP (1985, 2009, 2011) European GP (1984, 1995-96; 1999-2007) and Luxembourg GP (1997-98).
Michael Schumacher holds the record for most German GP victories with four. Schumacher, a German, won it in 1995, 2002, '04 and '06. Fernando Alonso from Ferrari leads all active drivers with three wins in the German GP (2005, '10 and '12). Lewis Hamilton is the only other active driver with multiple victories in this event (2008 and '11).
Mark Webber's first career F1 grand prix win and pole victory came in the 2009 German GP, held at Nurburgring. Webber, who is in his last season with Red Bull this year, set a record for making the most F1 starts (130) before his first victory. He also became the first Australian driver to win a grand prix since Alan Jones in 1981 at Las Vegas.
Ferrari leads all constructors with 22 wins in the German GP. Williams has the second most victories in this event with 9.
Four German drivers are competing in this weekend's race: Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull), Nico Rosberg (Mercedes), Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber) and Adrian Sutil (Force India). Neither one of them has yet to win the German GP.
Round 10 in this year's F1 world championship is the July 28 Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest, Hungary. Lewis Hamilton is the defending race winner.
