SOCCER

The U.S. concluded play at the FIFA U20 World Cup 2013 after falling to Ghana, 4-1, on June 27 in Kayseri, Turkey. The team first lost to Spain, 4-1, then tied with France, 1-1, while playing in Istanbul.

TENNIS

Sloane Stephens (Plantation, Fla.) defeated Puerto Rico's Monica Puig, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, in the fourth round of singles at Wimbledon, held June 24-July 7 in London. She is the last American in singles, after Sabine Lisicki overcame Serena Williams (Saginaw, Mich.), 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, to end the American's 34-match winning streak. On the men's side, brothers Mike Bryan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Bob Bryan (Camarillo, Calif.) advanced to the third round after beating Spain's David Marrero and Italy's Andreas Seppi, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4, in doubles.

TRACK & FIELD

Christian Taylor (Daytona Beach, Calif.) won the men's triple jump with a season best leap of 17.66 meters at the Sainsbury's Grand Prix, held June 30 in Birmingham, England. The seventh stop of the Diamond League series was a success for several U.S. track & field athletes. Dawn Harper-Nelson (East St. Louis, Ill.) won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 12.64, while Reese Hoffa's (Augusta, Ga.) throw of 21.34 meters won him the men's shot put.

VOLLEYBALL

The U.S. Men's National Team overcame Bulgaria, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21, on June 28 in the first match of a two-game FIVB World League series, before falling, 25-20, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21, the following day.

The U.S. Women's Junior National Volleyball Team beat Puerto Rico, 25-15, 25-22, 25-18, in its final game at the 2013 FIVB Women's U20 World Championship, held June 21-30 in Brno, Czech Republic. Losses early in the tournament landed the team a fifth-place finish in pool C and a spot in the 17-20 classification bracket. Victories over Thailand, Nigeria and Puerto Rico then helped the team secure a 17th-place finish.

The U.S. fell to Egypt in pool play at the FIVB Volleyball Boys' U19 World Championship, held June 27-July 7 in Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico. After a 27 23-25, 25-16, 28-26, 25-17 loss to Algeria and a 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 victory over Brazil. On Monday, they evened their record at 2-2 after beating Korea, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-25, 17-15.

WEIGHTLIFTING

2012 Olympian Sarah Robles (San Jacinto, Calif.) seized the gold medal in the 75 kg.+ weight class at the Pan American Championships, held June 22-30 in Caracas, Venezuela. Jenny Arthur (Gainesville, Ga.), Travis Cooper (Tyrone, Ga.) and Donovan Ford (Sacramento, Calif.) also took home medals.

    Bob Bryan (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla.) and Mike Bryan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) became the first mens doubles team in the Open-era to hold all four major titles along with an Olympic gold medal after winning the mens doubles final at the 2013 Wimbledon Championships, held June 29-July 7 in London. The sibling duo earned a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory over to the Croatian/Brazilian pairing of Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo in the final. With the win, the Bryan brothers earned their 15th Grand Slam title and improved their record as the winningest mens pairing of all time.

  • 37,000 police to secure Sochi Games

    Russia's interior minister said Friday that 37,000 police officers have been deployed to protect the 2014 Winter Games in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, repeating official assurances to make the Olympics safe despite the threat of an Islamist insurgency in the region.
