Miami Marlins’ rotation has star potential

WEB VOTE Has the Marlins' successful June made you eager to attend their games?

When Mike Redmond played for the then-Florida Marlins, he caught for pitchers Josh Beckett, Dontrelle Willis, A.J. Burnett and Ryan Dempster early in their careers.

Now, as manager, Redmond oversees a young staff also flashing some serious star potential.

Jacob Turner, Nathan Eovaldi and Jose Fernandez are a combined 7-4 on the season for the Fish, with Turner and Eovaldi joining the rotation late after injuries. Turner and Eovaldi came to the team last year through trades, while Fernandez was a high draft pick by the ballclub.

The three, all from 1990 to 1992, have been a bright spot during the Marlins’ June resurgence.

Turner has dominated in six starts on the season, going 2-0 with a 1.76 ERA, including a complete game in his last outing.

Eovaldi has made only three starts, but he’s 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA, while holding opponents to a .177 batting average.

Fernandez entered his Monday start with a 4-4 record and 2.98 ERA to go along with his 84 strikeouts.

“It’s nice to get those guys down there and create stability and see what they can do over the course of a season,” Redmond said about his rotation finally coming together. “Those guys have the ability to shut out any lineup in this league. Now it’s just a matter of them gaining experience and confidence. It’s been fun.”

Redmond added that he sees similarities between his young staff now and the pitchers he caught for as a Marlin.

Turner said that the group is aware about the history of pitching in the organization.

“It’s exciting. Jose and Nate have a lot of talent,” Turner said. “Everybody knows about how they built their world championship teams in the past. It’s exciting to see some of the young guys do so well, hopefully that bodes well for the future.”

Also boding well for the future: Redmond announced that Henderson Alvarez will join the rotation Thursday after completing his rehab assignment.

Possible All-Stars

With Major League Baseball requiring every team to have a representative at July’s All-Star Game, the Marlins, who have spent much of the season in last place, will be sending someone to the midsummer classic.

On Monday, Redmond offered some ideas of who might be selected from the club, including outfielder Marcell Ozuna, closer Steve Cishek and Fernandez.

Ozuna leads the team in batting with a .300 average for players with more than 150 at-bats, and has driven in 26 runs in the middle of the lineup. Cishek has 14 saves in 16 opportunities, coming on strong in June as the team won 15 games in the month.

Redmond also added that he would love to see Giancarlo Stanton in the Home Run Derby, comparing his “raw power” to the likes of Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa.
