Miami Marlins expected to trade Ricky Nolasco soon

Marlins pitcher Ricky Nolasco might have made his last start for the team on Friday night. Nolasco, the Marlins’ franchise leader in strikeouts and wins, has been rumored to join the Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Diego Padres and the Baltimore Orioles, among other teams. Miami is expected to move him well in advance of July’s trade deadline.

Marlins manager Mike Redmond didn’t comment on Nolasco’s status before his Friday start, but he did reveal some behind-the-scenes stories on trade-deadline rumors from his playing days.

“I don’t how guys shut it off because I’ve never been in that situation where I’ve been the focus of a trade,” Redmond said of dealing with rumors. “[Former Marlin] Kevin Millar always thought he was getting traded. Every year he’s going, ‘I heard I’m going to Boston.’

“I was like ‘Kevin, man, come on, you’re a role player. I know you can hit a little bit, but I think they’re coming for A.J. [ Burnett], or Josh [ Beckett] or Dontrelle [ Willis] before they’re coming for you.’ ’’

With Nolasco expected out of the pitching rotation soon, the Marlins could have his replacement waiting in the wings.

Henderson Alvarez, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list in May, is “near the end of his rehab,” according to Redmond.

Alvarez made what could be the last of his rehab starts for Double A Jacksonville on Friday, and is eligible to return to the Marlins’ roster.

Ruggiano’s status

Though he is dealing with a strained left shoulder he injured in San Francisco while diving for a ball, outfielder Justin Ruggiano expects to be in the starting lineup Saturday.

“I banged it up pretty good,” Ruggiano said.

Ruggiano said he hasn’t yet had am MRI on the shoulder but is hoping one isn’t necessary.

“Without an MRI, they’re calling it maybe a slight labrum tear, some capsule stretching is what they said,” Ruggiano said. “All it needs is some rehab. If I feel like it’s not getting any better and it pops out again, then I’ll have to get a MRI.”

Ruggiano injured his right shoulder while diving for a ball last September but said his latest injury is not as severe as that one.

• According to the Elias Sports Bureau, when Placido Polanco homered for the first time this season on Wednesday, it left only two teams without a home run from a non-pitching position: the Athletics from their second basemen and the Nationals from their center fielders. The Marlins had been without one from their third basemen until Polanco went deep.
