Miami Springs Police arrested a 32-year-old Doral man on June 20 for allegedly causing an accident with serious injuries and leaving the scene.

According to a report, Ariangel Alberto Iguaran was driving a 2006 Chrysler van south on Miller Drive at 5 a.m. on June 19 when he failed to yield at a stop sign, entered Northwest 36th Street and struck an eastbound 1997 Dodge.

The driver of the Dodge, Theodor McGill Lawrence, 44, was seriously injured in the crash and trapped in his vehicle. A witness said Iguaran, who wasn’t injured, tried to open Lawrence’s driver’s side door to help get him out but was unsuccessful.

Iguaran walked away when officers arrived and were busy attending to the injured man, whose legs were trapped under the dashboard. Although officers searched for Iguaran, he managed to walk to Northwest 36th Street and 72nd Avenue, where he caught a bus home.

Lawrence, a state corrections lieutenant, was on his way to work when the accident happened. He was transported to a hospital and underwent an operation for a knee injury. On Friday, police said he was in stable condition.

Because Iguaran’s vehicle was still on the scene, police had no problem finding him. Detective Ray Tamargo called the suspect and he went to the Miami Springs Police station, where he was questioned. Iguaran told police he was in the area trying to find a female friend who was staying in a local hotel. He said he panicked at the accident scene and left to avoid arrest.

Iguaran was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.
