Police were called out Tuesday afternoon to Lauderhill Mall after more than 200 teenagers responded to a social media posting encouraging people to gather at the mall.
It took nearly 30 officers from different Broward agencies including Lauderhill, Plantation and the Broward Sheriff’s Office to disperse the crowd.
A small fight broke out inside the mall injuring one teenager. Lauderhill Police Lt. Mike Butkus said the 16-year-old’s injuries were not serious and no arrests were made. No weapons were used in the scuffle.
“The police presence was meant to show that we would not tolerate anyone breaking the law,” he said.
The crowd initially gathered outside the mall at 1267 N. State Road 7 in response the post. Butkus said it was not clear what form of social media was used, who made the post or why people were told to go the mall.
As of Tuesday evening police were still at the mall trying to get everyone to leave, Butkus said.
“Officers are hanging around to make sure no one comes back,” he said.
