President Obama made the right decision to supply small-arms support to Syrian rebels. Restoring the balance of power between the rebels and President Bashar Assad either will result in peace negotiations, a divided and weakened Syria or the civil war continuing. These outcomes are all in the best interests of the United States and our allies. Negotiations hopefully will result in democracy and the end of Assad’s rule. In as much as there are no allies of our nation in this conflict, we win if they continue to weaken each other.
There are many voices that talk about the humanitarian crisis. This is a civil war, and it’s clear that the deaths of more than 93,000 people don’t concern the Assad government or the rebels. If they have no regard for their own people, the rest of the world as well can dismiss their wellbeing.
