In the June 22 Other Views column One man’s battle to preserve history, Joe Cardona writes about Rafael Peñalver’s effort to preserve Cuban heritage and culture by supporting the San Carlos Institute in Key West. I commend Peñalver’s efforts.
I have visited Casa San Carlos several times and admire the building’s state of preservation, its collection of artwork and books and the many exhibits about Cuban history and culture.
I encourage Cuban Americans to drive to Key West and not only enjoy the music and culture of this unique location, but also to visit the San Carlos Institute and enjoy the exhibits.
The ones that impressed me the most were the small boats once used by balseros to reach our coast and find freedom and economic opportunity.
