In the June 19 article Miami-Dade commission OKs animal welfare plan , Commissioner Esteban Bovo dismissed the 500,000 voters supporting the Pets’ Trust as too ignorant to understand that we were voting ourselves a property tax. He maintained that it was merely a poll, and that polls are written to get the answer they want because “no one would vote to kill animals.” He also commented upon budgetary deficits and difficulties of getting funding for other county priorities.
This is the whole reason for the Pets’ Trust proposal. The commission has never adequately funded Animal Services. There are always higher priorities when the budget is finalized. We need the dedicated funding to ensure the killing of homeless and unwanted pets will finally end.
