If you are anxious to watch our Miami Springs Little League Minors All-Star team participate in this summer’s District 8 playoffs, you are not going to have to travel very far. That’s because Prince Field is ready to host this year’s District 8 North Pool Tournament beginning this Friday, June 21.
The Springs Minors stars (ages 9-10), coached by Robert Gonzalez-Pino, will be joined by three other teams in the North Pool — North Miami, North Miami Beach and Liberty City. Each team will play the other once and at the conclusion of those three games will be seeded No. 1 through No. 4. The No. 4 seed will take on the No. 1 seed and No. 3 will face No. 2 in the North Pool semifinals on Monday, July 1 at the two fields. The two winners will advance to the North pool championship game on Wednesday, July 3 at 7 p.m. on Field 1.
Meanwhile, while all this is going on, Key Largo will serve as the host site for the District 8 South Pool division featuring five teams — Upper Keys, Homestead, Doral, Kendall 1 and Kendall 2. Their title game will also be on July 3 before the South and North winners square off against each other on Saturday, July 6 in Key Largo at 11 a.m. to determine the District 8 representative.
The North Pool action will get under way this Friday night, June 21 when the Springs Minors will take on Liberty City at 7:15 p.m. on Field 2, while NM and NMB will square off on the other field.
Springs will take the field for its second game on Sunday, June 23 against North Miami at 11 a.m. on Field 1, with LC and NMB meeting on the other field.
The third game for the teams will be Thursday, June 27 when Springs meets NMB at 7:15 p.m. on Field 2 and Liberty City takes on North Miami at 7 p.m. on Field 1. Springs may have also caught a break this year as Doral, normally a strong team and last year’s District 8 champion, was switched from the North to the South Pool and will battle it out with the two Kendall teams for the South title.
With head coach Eric Argote Sr. at the controls, the Majors All-Stars (ages 11-12) will travel to Pepper Park in North Miami to begin their District 8 Tournament beginning on Friday, June 28. The Majors stars will be joined by the same group of teams as the minors — Liberty City, North Miami and North Miami Beach.
“I’m excited and looking forward to a terrific tournament,” said Gonzalez-Pino. “We’ve got plenty of talent on this team and feel like we might be able to make some noise.”
“We’re looking forward to some exciting baseball over the next few weeks and are hoping everyone in the community comes out and shows their support,” said Miami Springs Little League President Otto Camejo.
