South Florida teams take aim at national spotlight

The Dolphins hosted a 7-on-7 football tournament with 64 teams vying for a chance to represent South Florida.

Hill, who resigned from an assistant position at the University of Florida last August amid the NCAA’s investigation into Miami’s program, was hired in May and has already made an impression on his team with his family-oriented nature.

“It’s a major impact,” Stafford said. Right now, the kids have corralled to him. Every day, he’s pushing them, he’s challenging them. He’s very open with the kids. He reaches out to the players and he wants them to reach out to him.”

Flowers drops USF

Miami Jackson quarterback Quinton Flowers withdrew his verbal commitment to USF on Saturday — after committing to the school just the night before.

After a talk with his brother Nathaniel, Flowers said his brother wanted him to leave the state and “experience life.”

“It’s my chance to get out, have fun, see something new and bring him up to see something new,” Flowers said.

Flowers, who lives with his uncle’s family after his parents died, said his new top five list of possible destinations for college are Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas, TCU and Alabama.

“He’s a great kid,” Brown said. “He’s a kid with a lot on his shoulders, a lot of adversities and tragic [events] in life. Football is just a getaway for him.”

This and that

• University School with quarterback Sean White’s ability to look off defenders in the pocket and read progressions down the field have a great shot at repeating as Class 3A state champions this year.

White, a transfer from Chaminade-Madonna, said he plans to visit Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, Ole Miss and Arkansas in the coming weeks.

• Booker T. quarterback Treon Harris, who holds offers from every major state school including Miami, Florida, and FSU, said he’s not looking to make a decision any time soon, but will be making visits to campuses during the fall.
