New members were welcomed into the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Coral Gables Woman’s Club recently at a ceremony that also included annual awards and a rededication for the group’s board of directors. This club owns and operates a free children’s dental clinic attached to their historic clubhouse.
At the event, President Mireya Kilmon, beginning the second half of her two-year term, also thanked top fundraisers and grant writers. All in attendance enjoyed dinner and a good time.
Gloria Burns of Miami’s Community Newspapers won the Barbara Rosenthal/Sherry Wheeler Leadership Award as well as the Florida Federation of Women’s Club Blue Ribbon Award for membership. Debi Moore of Gulliver Schools was honored with the prestigious Barbara Lapsley New Member of the Year Award.
Burns, who had also served as the club’s Queen of the Month in May, passed her tiara and pageant sash on to Past President Linda Hartwell, the 2013 Casino Night Chair, who will reign through the summer. Kilmon, who holds several pageant titles, originated the tiara and sash idea. The honor recognizes members who have gone above and beyond in service.
Among the many who also helped make the evening a success were Past Presidents Pam Schaefer and Barbara Lapsley, Sandy Schaefer, Maryann Etkin, and Ana Lam. Heike Liebkuchler, Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs District 11 Director, officiated over the rededication of the board.
This dedicated group meets the first and third Wednesday of every month. Women who are interested in giving back to their community and meeting new friends are encouraged to visit www.coralgableswomansclub.org to learn more. You do not have to live in Coral Gables to join the club.
