Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart has the chance to do a tremendous amount of good by supporting HR 1731, a proposed amendment to the Farm Bill. This bill is an all-around win.
It requires that egg-laying hens have enough space to nest and fully extend their wings, bans starving hens to prompt growth, includes new ammonia standards in hen houses to protect farm workers and animals and creates the first federal standards for egg production.
It also creates a more competitive and fair egg market, which is why the United Egg Producers, which represents 90 percent of U.S. egg farmers, and the Humane Society of the United States both support the amendment. It’s not every day that egg producers and animal advocacy groups agree with each other. Rep. Diaz-Balart should make the compassionate and economically sound choice and join them.
