If your typical Friday night consists of staying in and watching saved reality shows on Comcast, I have a much needed escape for you.

On June 21st, the Francophone day of free music to welcome summer, Fete de la Musique, comes to Big Night in Little Haiti at the Little Haiti Cultural Center located at 212 NE 59th Terrace.

Join one of the new stars of “la nouvelle scene,” Caribbean progeny and Parisian nationalist, Stevy Mahy as she blows your perception of traditional Haitian music by singing (gasp!) folk music in English, French, and Creole.

Presented by the Rhythm Foundation, Mahy is scheduled to lead attendees into a “kreyol folk” trip with her acoustic sounds singing some of her popular hits like “Beautiful,” “Something About You,” “Haiti Cherie,” “San Vou,” and much more.

(If you’re completely lost by that playlist, do yourself a favor and YouTube her songs.)

Between her sets, DJ Mack of Mizikpam.com will be spinning on the 1’s and 2’s.

And if you don’t get lost in her music, get distracted by her Afrocentric style.

A stunning beauty, Mahy’s style consists of wearing her hair in a Caesar haircut with vibrant make-up reminiscent of Erykah Badu and Floetry, a look she says is influenced by her life experiences and being.

Despite her international acclaim, she’s not beneath sharing the stage as the venue features an open stage for the public to make music. That’s right: Channel your inner artiste by bringing an instrument to the party.

Afterwards, take in an art exhibit that features selections of modern crafts from Haitian artisans curated by Donna Karan for Donna Karan’s Discover Haiti. In conjunction with Urban Zen Project, the exhibit will be held at the Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance located at 225 NE 59th Street from 6 – 10 pm.

Big Night in Little Haiti is a cultural event held monthly every third Friday.

Fete de la Musique is presented with the Consulate General of France in Miami Cultural Services.

For more information: Visit BigNightLittleHaiti.com or call 305-960-2969. Fete de la Musique runs from 6 – 8 pm.
