A teenage boy drowned Sunday night in a Hollywood canal where he was playing on a rope swing with a group of friends.
The kids were swimming in the canal behind the Oakwood Plaza shopping center on Oakwood Boulevard near the intersection of Interstate 95 and Stirling Road when some of them noticed the teen was in trouble, said Hollywood Fire Rescue spokesman Joel Medina.
A bunch of kids swam over to a makeshift rope swing, he said. On the swim back to where they entered the water, they noticed he was having trouble. And then he went below the surface of the water and didnt come back up.
Police received a 911 call at about 7:30, Medina said, and sent divers to search for the teen.
They found his body in the canal at about 11 p.m.
Police are withholding the teenagers name until his family is notified, said Hollywood police spokeswoman Nikki Coffin.
