Sawgrass Mills reopens after power outage shut down mall

Sawgrass Mills reopened 10 a.m. Friday after a power outage shut down the discount mega-mall.

The mall, 12801 W. Sunrise Blvd. in Sunrise, lost power along with other buildings in the area Thursday afternoon said Michael Goodman, a mall spokesman.

Police surrounded the complex and emptied the mall of shoppers and employees from 3 to 4 p.m. The mall, including restaurants, never reopened Thursday.

Florida Power & Light worked through the night to restore power. FPL spokeswoman Marie Berot said the outage is related to "equipment failure" but the utility won't know the cause for a few days. She apologized on behalf of the utility.

Neighboring buildings also had outages, but those could have been weather-related, she said.

Sawgrass Mills is open Friday until 9:30 p.m. Mall officials declined to comment on lost sales from the power outage.
