North Miami mayor delivers unfiltered farewell speech

ngreen@MiamiHerald.com

At his last meeting in office, North Miami Mayor Andre Pierre gave an unfiltered speech to an audience of dozens at City Hall.

“You have to get tested,” he said of his job as mayor. “The devil, of course, is going to come and test you.”

Though he called his four-year term “joyful,” the Haitian-born Pierre said he received some pushback for supporting the Haitian community.

“If you are going to fight for Haitians, they will come after you — especially in this community,” he said.

Pierre also addressed an incident in 2011 when his wife was called a racial slur by a resident.

“I can’t believe that another man would call her a n---er,” Pierre said. “That was really hurtful. He was very lucky that my .44-caliber was not close.”
