The focus on the sexuality of Kaitlyn Hunt, the 18-year-old who is charged with a felony as a result of her sexual relationship with a 14-year-old, is troubling. The fact that both teens are female is irrelevant, and headlines such as the one on May 24, Lesbian, 18, rejects plea deal that would have kept her off sex-offenders registry, simply perpetuate the unfortunate association that many still have between sex offenders and homosexuals.
Such headlines only stigmatize a segment of the population and sensationalize a quality of the alleged perpetrator that isn’t relevant to the underlying prosecution. The focus should be on the charges themselves and the issues raised by laws that criminalize teenage sexual activity, not on the sexual orientation of those involved.
The history of the gay-rights movement is replete with malicious attempts to equate homosexuality with sexual deviance. Those of us who are gay would prefer that the media not be complicit in this association.
