I was shocked to open my May 20 Herald and see William Van Poyck’s picture staring at me. The story Gov. Rick Scott speeds up warrants for Death Row inmates
says that he is scheduled to be executed on June 12 for the murder of a prison guard. Actually, Billy snever killed anyone.
He and his friend, Frank Valdez, plotted to free a friend from prison. When their friend was being escorted by a guard to the dentist, Billy and Valdez intercepted them. Valdez shot and killed the guard. Both were convicted and sentenced to death.
I knew Billy when he was a young kid growing up in our Pinecrest neighborhood, playing with my sons Carl and Jackson. His mother died tragically when Billy was just an infant.
I think if our governor takes a careful look at Billy’s case, he will reconsider his execution order and spare Billy’s life.
