Florida Power and Light contractors completed a phase of improvements to the electrical grid serving the Westwood Lakes neighborhood in West Miami-Dade on Thursday.

“We are reinforcing the electrical system with new poles that better withstand severe storms, speed up recovery after a storm, and improve everyday reliability for the area,” said Dave McDermitt, a spokesman for FPL.

According to McDermitt, the project involved the replacement of some of the poles that currently provide service to the homes and businesses — bordered by Bird Road to the north, 47th Street to the south, 117th Avenue to the west, and 112th Avenue to the east — with 47 new poles, about half of which are made of concrete and are capable of withstanding wind gusts of up to 200 miles per hour.

Included in the service area is the Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Westwood Lakes Maintenance Facility.

McDermitt said “the improvements will help us restore service faster so the community can get back on its feet after a storm.”
