One killed, two injured in crash on Florida’s Turnpike in Miramar

One person was killed and two were injured in an early-morning car crash on the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike in Miramar.

Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release that a 2004 Hyundai XG 350 was stopped in the westbound left lane of the Homestead Extension west of University Drive when a 2011 Nissan 370 struck it from behind at about 2:45 a.m.

The Hyundai burst into flames.

A bystander and the driver of the Nissan pulled the Hyundai’s driver out of the car, but were unable to rescue a passenger, who died at the scene.

The driver of the Hyundai was taken to Jackson Memorial Burn Center with critical injuries.

The driver of the Nissan was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

FHP was still investigating the cause of the crash late Saturday afternoon, and did not yet know why the Hyundai was stopped on the road.

They are withholding the names of the Hyundai’s driver and passenger pending notification of kin.
