A fire on Tuesday at the South Miami Senior Center led to the evacuation of the apartment complex and the rescue of a dog from the sixth floor.

The fire broke out in one of the apartments at 6701 SW 62nd Ave., with smoke spreading through the hallways, according to the South Miami Police Department.

Officers rushed to the building to evacuate 73 tenants, several of them who use walkers and wheelchairs.

In addition to fire damage in one apartment, eight others had smoke damage. A candle left inside the closet of an apartment was the likely cause, police said.

A dog was rescued from the apartment where the fire started and returned to the owner outside the building.
