Coast Guard searching for missing boater headed to Key West

Coast Guard crews were searching Tuesday night for a man who set out on a boat Monday from Fort Myers and never arrived in Key West.

The boater has been identified as Jay Rydberg, 40, of Fairbanks, Alaska.

The Coast Guard said it received a distress radio beacon from Rydberg’s boat, a 39-foot Trimaran some 30 miles north of Key West early Tuesday.

Coast Guard watchstanders contacted a friend of Rydberg, who told the Coast Guard he had left from Florida’s West Coast on Monday and was due to arrive in Key West on Tuesday.

Seventh Coast Guard District quickly launched a cutter and air crew from Miami to search for Rydberg.

Anyone with information on Rydberg's whereabouts is asked to contact the Coast Guard at 305-415-6800.
