Isolina Maroño wins only contested Sweetwater council seat

Special to The Miami Herald

Sweetwater commissioner Isolina Maroño was elected to serve on the Group 4 commission seat during Tuesday’s municipal elections.

She defeated her opponent, Deborah Centeno, with 1,065 votes compared with 406 votes, according to unofficial Miami-Dade County elections results. A total of 1,471 residents voted.

The Group 4 seat was the lone seat up for election. The seat will be for a four-year term.

Maroño is the mother of Mayor Manny Maroño. She was appointed as an interim commissioner to fill a seat left vacant by the late Vice Mayor Ariel J. Abelairas last year.

Commissioner Jose Diaz, who sits on the Group 3 seat; Commissioner Jose Bergouignan, who sits on the Group 2 seat; and Commissioner Orlando Lopez, who sits on the Group 1 seat all retained their positions, as they weren’t contested.
